Walking from the Trevi Fountain: distances and routes

The Trevi sits in the middle of Rome's historic centre. The Spanish Steps and the Pantheon are about ten minutes away on foot, the Colosseum about 25 and St Peter's about 35.

The distances below are calculated from map coordinates: straight-line distance, then a walking estimate at 1.3 times that, at about 80 metres a minute. Treat them as rounded guides; your route and pace will vary.

Below: a distance table, the short walks to the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, the longer ones to the Colosseum and St Peter's, the nearest metro, and the rules to know on the way.

The quick answer

From the Trevi Fountain it is about 700 m (10 minutes) to the Spanish Steps, 800 m (10 minutes) to the Pantheon, 750 m (10 minutes) to Barberini metro on line A, 1.1 km (15 minutes) to Piazza Navona, 1.8 km (25 minutes) to the Colosseum and 2.8 km (35 minutes) to St Peter's Square. All are easy walks; the Colosseum and the Vatican are the only ones worth planning.

How far is the Trevi Fountain from Rome's main sights?

Between 10 and 35 minutes on foot: the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon and Barberini metro about 10, Navona 15, the Colosseum 25, St Peter's 35.

Rounded estimates; walking times are at an easy pace and do not include stops.

How far is the Trevi Fountain from the Spanish Steps?

About 700 m on foot, roughly 10 minutes.

It is the shortest of the classic walks. The aqueduct walk does it the other way round with a story attached: it starts at the Spanish Steps and follows the route of the ancient Aqua Virgo, partly underground, to the Trevi. The sunset walk ends at the Spanish Steps. Once there, do not sit down on the steps: see the rules below.

How far is the Pantheon, and Piazza Navona?

The Pantheon is about 800 m (10 minutes) from the Trevi; Piazza Navona about 1.1 km (15 minutes), and about 5 minutes beyond the Pantheon.

The two evening walks link all three. The moonlight walk starts in Piazza Navona, strolls to the Pantheon, a 5-minute walk according to the operator, then on to the Trevi. The sunset walk goes Navona, Pantheon (outside view only), Trevi, then the Spanish Steps.

Can you walk from the Trevi Fountain to the Colosseum?

Yes: about 1.8 km, roughly 25 minutes, by way of Piazza Venezia and the Via dei Fori Imperiali.

This is the route the moonlight walk takes at night: from the Trevi through the backstreets to Piazza Venezia, below the Capitoline Hill, then down Via dei Fori Imperiali past Trajan's Column and the forums to the Colosseum. If you plan to go inside, book ahead: the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine tour ($55, rated 4.8 from 92,024 reviews) asks for each visitor's full name and date of birth at booking, or entry is refused, and its free cancellation runs to 3 days before, not 24 hours.

Can you walk from the Trevi Fountain to the Vatican?

Yes, but it is the longest walk: about 2.8 km to St Peter's Square, roughly 35 minutes, crossing the Tiber.

Allow more if you stop at the Pantheon or Navona on the way, which are roughly in the same direction. If you would rather ride, the private golf cart lists St Peter's Basilica on its sample route, along with the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon and the Colosseum, and it can be customised.

Which metro station is closest to the Trevi Fountain?

Barberini, on line A, about 750 m away, roughly a 10-minute walk.

For most of the historic centre, walking is quicker than the metro. If your legs are done for the day, the night golf cart tour collects you from your hotel in central Rome and makes photo stops at the Colosseum, the Trevi and Piazza Navona after dark.

Rome's highlights without the walking: a private golf cart from your hotel, with the Trevi ticket included.

Can you sit on the Spanish Steps or eat at the Trevi Fountain?

No. Since 8 July 2019, sitting, eating and drinking on the Spanish Steps has been banned, with fines up to €400, and the same regulation covers other landmarks including the Trevi.

At the Trevi, bathing is prohibited too, and the coin toss is the only contact with the fountain the rules allow (see the coin toss). We have not found an official fine amount for the Trevi itself, so we do not print one. Eat your gelato in a side street, not on the steps.

Is there a dress code at the Trevi Fountain?

No: it is an open public square. Churches nearby, and the Vatican, generally expect covered shoulders and knees.

If you plan to go into a church or St Peter's on the same walk, carry a light layer to cover your shoulders and wear something that covers your knees. For the fountain itself, wear comfortable shoes: the timing that works best for the walk is in the best time to visit.

Inside the Pantheon: marble columns, a statue in a niche and an altar with tall candlesticks
