Rome now charges for the inner perimeter of the Trevi Fountain, the basin area by the water that the official site calls the catino. The rest of Piazza di Trevi, and the view of Nicola Salvi's facade, stays free at any hour.
This guide covers the price, the exact paid hours (they differ on Mondays and Fridays), who goes in free, where to buy the ticket, which tours on this site include it, and when a tour is worth paying for and when it is not.
The quick answer
You do not need a ticket to see the Trevi Fountain: the piazza is free at all hours. Since 2 February 2026, the basin area by the water costs €2 from 9:00 to 22:00 on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, and from 11:30 to 22:00 on Monday and Friday, with last entry at 21:00: between 21:00 and 22:00 nobody new goes in, and outside the paid hours it costs nothing. Children under 6, Rome residents with ID, people with disabilities plus one companion, licensed guides and Roma MIC Card holders do not pay.

Do you need a ticket to see the Trevi Fountain?
Not to see it: the piazza and the view of the fountain are free at all hours. The €2 ticket is only for the basin area, the steps down to the water.
The fee started on 2 February 2026, a Monday. It is charged per person and only for the close-up area inside the barrier; standing in the square, taking photos from the piazza or passing through costs nothing. Rome expects the fee to raise millions of euros a year. Alessandro Onorato, the city's tourism assessor, told NPR: “I think tourists were shocked by the fact that the city of Rome is only asking for 2 euros for a site of this level.”

What are the Trevi Fountain ticket hours?
9:00 to 22:00 on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday; 11:30 to 22:00 on Monday and Friday. Last entry is 21:00 every day; no new entries from 21:00 to 22:00.
Some tourism and news pages give 9:00 to 22:00 every day. The official fountain site starts the paid hours at 11:30 on Mondays and Fridays, and the official site is what we follow. That makes a paid window of 13 hours on most days and 10.5 hours on Mondays and Fridays.
| Day | Paid hours | Last entry | No charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | 11:30 to 22:00 | 21:00 | Before 11:30, after 22:00 |
| Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday | 9:00 to 22:00 | 21:00 | Before 9:00, after 22:00 |
| Friday | 11:30 to 22:00 | 21:00 | Before 11:30, after 22:00 |
| Saturday, Sunday | 9:00 to 22:00 | 21:00 | Before 9:00, after 22:00 |

Children under 6, residents of Rome and its Metropolitan City with ID, people with disabilities plus one companion, licensed tour guides and valid Roma MIC Card holders.
- Children under 6: free. Some tourism pages say under 5; the official site says under 6, and the official site wins.
- Residents: of Rome and the Metropolitan City, with ID.
- People with disabilities: free, together with one companion.
- Licensed tour guides: free. Several news pages leave this out.
- Roma MIC Card holders: free with a valid card, another exemption some pages omit.
Everyone else pays €2, during paid hours only.

Where do you buy a Trevi Fountain ticket?
Online on the official fountain site, at the Civic Museums ticket offices, at Tourist Infopoints, at affiliated sales points, or at the entrance by card only.
The official site is fontanaditrevi.roma.it. At the fountain itself you can pay at the entrance, but only by card, so do not count on cash. If you would rather not deal with the ticket at all, four tours on this site include it; the cheapest is the small-group basin visit at $13, and the shortest the 25-minute intro at $16.

Want someone to explain what you are looking at? A 25-minute intro in groups of up to 5, with the basin entry included. Bring your own coin: it is not included.
Explore the 25-minute basin introWhich Trevi Fountain tours include the basin ticket?
Four of the ten Trevi tours on this site: the City of Water tour, the small-group basin visit, the 25-minute intro and the private golf cart.
The column below comes from each listing's ticked inclusions on GetYourGuide. Walks and underground-only tours stop in the piazza or go next door, but you buy the basin ticket yourself if you want to go down to the water. From-prices per person in USD; ratings and review counts are GetYourGuide's.
| Tour | Basin ticket included? | Length | Rating | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basin and City of Water tour | Included | 1 hour | 4.6 (308) | $50 |

| Basin entry and 25-minute intro | Included | 25 minutes | 4.7 (86) | $16 |
| Private golf cart with Trevi entry | Included | 2 to 2.5 hours | 4.9 (828) | $51 |

Is a tour worth it just for the basin ticket?
No. The access costs €2 at the gate. Book a tour for the guide, the underground ruins or the evening, not for the entry.
One GetYourGuide listing shows the trap. “Trevi Fountain Ticket + City Walking Tour” bundles the basin ticket with a walking tour or a 3D audio guide on your own phone, from about $23. Its guests rate it 3.6 out of 5 from 318 reviews, and only 3.1 for value for money. One wrote: “The value for money for a fountain tour at CHF 13.00/person, while on site it's 2 euros, I find that outrageous.” We do not list it.
The tours that earn their price add something the gate does not sell: a live guide (the small-group visit at $13), the Roman ruins next door (the City of Water tour at $50), or a private cart from your hotel. All of them are compared in Trevi Fountain tours compared.

Pay for what the gate does not sell: the Roman ruins next door and a live guide, with the basin ticket included.
Check dates for the basin and City of Water tourWhen is the Trevi basin free?
Outside the paid hours: from 22:00 until 9:00 the next morning, or until 11:30 on Mondays and Fridays.
Last entry is 21:00, so plan an evening visit before then if you want to pay and go in during the paid window, or after 22:00 if you want it free. Early mornings are the other free window, and the one photographers use. Which time suits you is covered in the best time to visit the Trevi Fountain.

What can you do inside, and what is still banned?
The ticket lets you walk down to the edge of the basin for a close-up view and photos; bathing is prohibited, and the coin toss is the one contact the rules still allow.
Guests of the small-group visit report about 15 minutes of history with the guide, then free time inside the barrier. Wading or bathing in the fountain is prohibited, and Rome's 2019 urban rules on sitting, eating and drinking at landmarks cover the Trevi too. The coin throw is still allowed: how to do it, and where the money goes, is in the Trevi Fountain coin toss.

Arriving tired? A private golf cart collects you from your hotel, the Trevi ticket comes with it, and so do gelato and supplì.
